Recently, Juan Ponce-Enrile, one of the denizens of the Martial Law era who should be in prison but is miraculously not and, in fact, even a senator, came out again with that ridiculous premise that the ouster of Presidents Marcos and Estrada was the work of the military and not People Power.

He claims it was the decision of the military to support People Power that finally caused Marcos and then later his disciple, Estrada, to step down from … nay, to flee … the Presidency.

Excuse me, Mang Johnny! The military had no choice but to support People Power. It was a spiritually powerful movement that could not be denied. Enrile, who tried to grab power several times through his lackeys like Gringo Honasan, knows nothing about spirituality. In fact, he cowered like a cornered rat with Fidel Ramos in Camp Crame precisely because his coup against Marcos was discovered.

And who saved him and his ragtag platoon? People Power! Who surrounded and protected them as they transferred from Camp Crame to Camp Aguinaldo? People Power! Who was forgiving enough so that Enrile, Ramos and Honasan were not thrown into prison but even went on to hold public office? People Power!

So this is the gratitude that Enrile has for his fellow Filipinos. He disregards the millions who trooped to the streets at the height of the two People Power uprisings, and instead focuses his myopic eye on the military and gives them the credit. This alone proves that Enrile is not the intelligent person that some sectors like to bandy about. He can only be best described by that Cebuano word, maro.

Perhaps Enrile can be forgiven somewhat if he made those statements in senility. Alas, it was stupidity and not senility that is accountable. As for Ramos he can be forgiven as his presidency brought back light, literally, to the Philippines.

Gringo Honasan? He should have stayed in hiding.
