A friend of mine opined to me, “Our country is like a slowly decaying house. We all know it’s about to crumble and cave in, but we’re not doing anything about it.”

Indeed! Just today we received the news that the Philippines is #1 on the list of the most dangerous countries for journalists; this according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an international body.

The report is not an isolated case, but one in a series of events that beg the question, “Who’s in control?”

If it’s Gloria (The Liar) Macapagal-Arroyo, it sure doesn’t look it. There seems to be no political will emanating from Malacañ¡®§ Palace. With political will comes authority. Journalists are getting killed because there is lack of authority and the fear thereof.

Now here comes retired General and former Defence Chief Fortunato Abat calling for a revolutionary government to replace GMA’s. Santa Santita anunsyo de Santa Barbara! Maybe he’s just a doddering old fool instigated by his own impending senility. Nevertheless he is reflective of a growing discontent on how GMA is running the country.

The sad thing about all this, however, is not the growing discontent. It’s that GMA is reflective of the kind of politicians we have. Many of them are just outside waiting for the house to crumble so they can move in with bulldozers and take the spoils.
